The gifts AI assistants will recommend this Christmas

The gifts AI assistants will recommend this Christmas

Gift shopping will start in a different place for a lot of people this Christmas. Instead of typing "gifts for dad" into a search box, they will ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI for an idea, and take the answer they get.

So we asked them first. We put 27 gift questions to five AI assistants once a day on 1, 2 and 3 November 2026, and recorded every brand they recommended and every website they cited. Below are the gifts they recommend most, and where those recommendations come from. The full method and data are in our AI visibility study.

The gifts AI assistants recommend this Christmas: the 10 most-recommended brands, the sites the assistants cite, and each assistant's top pick

Which gifts do AI assistants recommend most?

Apple came first, named in 10% of gift answers, almost always for AirPods Pro or AirTags. The Ember heated mug and the Kindle Paperwhite followed. The table shows the 10 brands named most often across 386 answers from all five assistants. A share is the share of answers that named the brand at least once.

No gift reached even one answer in ten. Gift answers are the most scattered of the 10 industries in our study, because "a good gift" depends on who it is for.

Which gifts AI picks for dad, mom and the kids

The picks get much sharper once the question names a person. Each question below was asked 15 times: five assistants on three days, minus any day Google showed no AI Overview. The figures count the answers that named each brand.

QuestionMost-named brands (answers out of about 15)
Christmas gift ideas for my dadLeatherman (8), MEATER (6), Ooni (5)
Christmas gifts for my momEmber (7), Barefoot Dreams (4), UGG (4)
Christmas gifts for menApple (8), Carhartt (4)
Gifts for teenage boysJBL (11), LEGO (8), Apple (7)
Gifts for 2-year-oldsLEGO (11), Melissa & Doug (7), Play-Doh (6)
Housewarming giftThe Home Depot (7), Williams-Sonoma (6)
Gift basket for himThe BroBasket (7), Harry & David (5)

For a one-year anniversary and for a 1-year-old, the answers named no brands at all: they suggested paper gifts, books and ideas instead.

Each AI assistant recommends gifts differently

The five assistants do not shop the same way. Gemini named brands in almost every gift answer. ChatGPT almost never did.

AssistantGift answers naming no brandTop pick
Gemini11%Ember mug, in 36% of its answers
Google AI Overviews27%Uncommon Goods, in 19%
Google AI Mode40%Ridge wallet, in 6%
Perplexity74%LEGO, in 10%
ChatGPT91%No brand above 2 of 81 answers

ChatGPT answered 91% of its gift questions without a single brand. It suggested ideas such as "a planned day together" or "a framed family picture", and often asked what the person enjoys before going further. If your product is a gift, ChatGPT is the assistant least likely to name it unprompted, and Gemini is the most likely.

Where AI gets its gift ideas

The assistants rarely point to the brand they recommend. Only 4% of gift recommendations came with a link to the brand's own website. The other 96% of the time, the answer cited someone else's pages, or no sources at all.

These are the sites the assistants cited most for gift questions, as a share of the 386 answers:

SiteShare of gift answers citing it
Good Housekeeping15%
Target14%
CNN14%
The New York Times14%
Uncommon Goods10%
Reddit9%

Most are gift guides: Good Housekeeping, CNN and the New York Times all publish them. Target and Uncommon Goods are the only shops in the top five.

Each assistant reads its own set. Perplexity leans on the big gift guides. ChatGPT cites Kiplinger most. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode lean on Reddit and YouTube.

What this means if you sell gifts online

Your product page is rarely what gets you recommended. The assistants build their gift answers from gift guides and big retailers, so that is where a gift brand needs to appear before December.

Four practical steps follow from the data:

  1. Get into the gift guides. The three biggest guide publishers in our data were each cited in about one gift answer in seven. A place in their guides reaches several assistants at once.
  2. Make sure the big retailers list you well. Target and Amazon pages were cited directly, so a clear product title and description there feed the answer.
  3. Watch the forum threads. Reddit was cited in 9% of gift answers, most often by Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  4. Ask the assistants yourself. Put your own customers' questions to each assistant and note who they name. The answers change from day to day, so one check is not enough.

How we ran this study

We ran 27 gift queries, each written the way a person types into a chat assistant. ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity answered through their APIs with web search on, and we collected Google AI Overviews and AI Mode for the matching search. Each question ran once a day on 1, 2 and 3 November 2026, from a US location. That gave 386 answers: 405 possible, less 19 searches where Google showed no AI Overview.

A brand counts once per answer, and products count under their brand (AirPods count as Apple). A site counts as cited when the answer lists it as a source. The API versions of ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini can answer differently from their apps, and three days is a short window, so read the shares as a snapshot of early November.

The gift questions are one of 10 industries in our AI visibility study, which covers 257 questions, every cited site, and a free data download.

See which AI assistants recommend your brand

Babel42 AI Visibility checks whether ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok and Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode recommend your brand, and lists the sources each one used. It shows which gift guides and retailers the answers cite for you and for your rivals, and how that changes from day to day. Read more about the AI visibility tool.
