How to rank in AI Overviews: what the cited pages had in common

We compared page-1 pages that Google's AI Overviews cited with pages they ignored at the same position. Cited pages had more substance and structure, and the quoted text came from the top. Five steps, each tied to a number.

How to rank in AI Overviews: what the cited pages had in common

Most advice on how to rank in AI Overviews is a list of guesses. We wanted steps that come from measured data. So we looked at which pages Google's AI Overviews cited, which pages they ignored, and what separated the two.

The data comes from our AI Overviews study. The sample was 660 US English Google searches in six industries. 600 were generic searches, 100 per industry, picked by a fixed rule from the highest search volume. Another 60 were "[brand] reviews" searches.

On the first day we recorded the organic top 10, the AI Overview and the AI Mode answer for every search. Then we downloaded and measured the pages. The 601 searches that showed an AI Overview were run again every day for 15 days. In short: 660 searches, repeated daily for 15 days, collected 26 September to 12 October 2026.

How do you rank in AI Overviews?

You rank in AI Overviews by getting your page cited as one of its sources. Our data supports five steps: rank high on page 1, give thin pages more substance, add structure, put the answer at the top, and appear on the sites AI Overviews cite most.

No single step is enough. Even the #1 organic result was cited only 48.8% of the time. Each step below comes with the number behind it, so you can judge how much weight to give it. For the wider picture of how AI assistants choose brands, see what AI search visibility measures.

Step 1: Rank as high on page 1 as you can

Higher organic positions were cited more often. Across 5,316 page-1 results, 32.3% were cited by the AI Overview on the same search. A result counts as cited when the AI Overview cites that same page. These are high-volume commercial US searches, not a random sample, and rankings were recorded on one day only.

The share falls almost every step down the page:

Organic positionCited by the AI Overview
#148.8%
#244.1%
#341.1%
#432.8%
#530.8%
#628.9%
#728.0%
#824.3%
#922.2%
#1021.5%

5,316 page-1 results from searches whose AI Overview cited at least one site, 26 September 2026. Full data.

Ranking still matters, so normal SEO work on a page is not wasted. A page high on page 1 starts with better odds. Ranking is not the only route in, though. In the study, 46% of the sites AI Overviews cited did not rank in Google's top 10 for the same search (the study covers this).

Step 2: Add substance to thin pages, not length

Pages that AI Overviews ignored were more often thin than long. We downloaded 3,972 page-1 pages. Then we compared the pages AI Overviews ignored with cited pages at the same organic position, so position does not explain the difference.

The table shows how often each group had each problem:

Problem on the pageCited pagesIgnored pages
Under 500 words16.5%25.4%
Fewer than 5 headings42.6%49.3%
No list or table38.4%45.3%
No named author42.4%48.5%
No schema markup28.5%35.1%
Older than 3 years10.8%16.8%
Over 3,000 words14.2%15.5%

3,972 page-1 pages downloaded and measured, 26 September 2026. Ignored pages compared with cited pages at the same organic position. Full data.

Short pages were the clearest gap. Under 500 words applied to 25.4% of ignored pages, against 16.5% of cited pages. Very long pages were almost equally common in both groups. The median ignored page had 1,053 words, and the median cited page 1,294.

Start with your short pages. A page under 500 words that targets a real question needs more facts, examples and detail. Cutting a long page down is unlikely to help, because long pages were not the ones being ignored.

Step 3: Add headings, lists, an author and a date

Cited pages had more structure than ignored pages at the same position. In the same comparison of 3,972 page-1 pages, fewer than 5 headings applied to 49.3% of ignored pages, against 42.6% of cited pages. No named author applied to 48.5% of ignored pages, against 42.4% of cited pages.

Age showed a similar gap. Pages older than 3 years made up 16.8% of the ignored group, against 10.8% of cited pages. Pages with no list or table, and pages with no schema markup, were also more common among the ignored group.

Each row is a difference between two groups of pages. It is not proof that one change on its own earns a citation. Taken together, the rows describe the page that lost: short, with few headings, no author and an old date.

The work for each page is concrete:

  • Split the text into sections under clear headings.
  • Put comparisons, prices and steps in a list or a table.
  • Name the person who wrote the page.
  • Show the published or updated date, and refresh pages older than three years.

Our guide to optimising content for AI search covers the formatting side in more detail.

Step 4: Put the answer in the first fifth of the page

Most of the text AI Overviews quoted came from the top of the page: 67% from the first 30%. We traced 1,702 quoted sections from AI Overviews back to the pages they came from. The first fifth of the page's main text alone supplied 56% of them.

The table shows where on the page the quoted text started:

Part of the pageAI OverviewsAI Mode
First fifth56%48%
Second fifth19%24%
Third fifth12%13%
Fourth fifth8%9%
Last fifth5%6%

1,702 AI Overview and 2,266 AI Mode quotes placed in the cited page's main text, 26 September 2026. Full data.

Google often rewords the page, so we placed each quote by exact match first and then by the closest wording. AI Mode followed the same pattern, with 62% of its quotes from the first 30% of the page. Our page on AI Mode vs AI Overviews explains how the two products differ.

AI Overviews lean on the top of the page more than ChatGPT does. Kevin Indig's analysis of ChatGPT, which our study cites for comparison, found 44% of its citations came from the first 30% of the page.

Open each page with the answer in one or two plain sentences. Move the definition, the number or the recommendation above the background and the story. A sentence you want quoted is far more likely to be used near the top than below several screens of introduction.

Step 5: Appear on YouTube, Reddit and specialist sites

AI Overviews cite a few outside sites very often. Across 8,295 Google AI Overviews collected over 16 days, YouTube was cited in 63.3% and Reddit in 24.0%. YouTube was the most-cited site in every industry.

After video and forums, each industry leans on a few specialists:

IndustrySpecialist siteShare of that industry's AI Overviews citing it
FinanceNerdWallet40.9%
HealthMayo Clinic35.6%
HealthCleveland Clinic32.8%
B2B softwareZapier29.8%
Local servicesAngi23.2%

TravelExpedia19.8%

8,295 AI Overviews citing at least one site, 600 generic searches, 26 September and 28 September to 12 October 2026. Full data.

Part of ranking in AI Overviews happens away from your own website. A product demo or review on YouTube can be the cited source for your search. So can a Reddit thread where your product is discussed, or a review on your industry's specialist site.

Find the specialists in your own category by looking at which sites the AI Overviews already cite for your searches. Then work on being covered there: send review units, answer questions in threads as yourself, and publish video that answers the same questions as your pages.

Measure each change as a citation rate over several days

AI Overview citations change from day to day, so one check before and after a change tells you little. In the study, only 11% of Google AI Overviews cited exactly the same sites as the day before. A page can be cited one day and missing the next with nothing changed on it.

Measure the share of days your page is cited for each search you care about. Compare that share before and after each step above. Our post on AI Overview tracking explains why one check misleads and how to measure citation as a rate over days.

See which sources AI Overviews cite for your brand

Babel42 AI Visibility checks whether Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini and Grok cite and recommend your brand, and lists the sources they used. That list shows whether your own pages are being cited, or whether YouTube, Reddit or a specialist site is answering for you.

Each gap points to one of the five steps. A rival's page cited for your search points to steps 2 to 4. A specialist site cited in your place points to step 5. Read how our AI visibility tool works.
